September Check-in:
It is hard to believe September is already here. Even if the weather hasn’t quite caught up with the calendar yet, your business schedule probably has.
September often brings business conferences and events, and a newly stacked event calendar for most organizations and business owners. Personally, I am always excited for the fall, and a renewed motivation to make the most of the last 4 months of the year.
With these events, come many new business ideas. As an advisor, I want to caution you to listen, take notes, and wait to put any of these ideas into action…at least until you sit down and strategize, consult your business plan, or get your coach’s perspective.
What I See
With these events, owners often get all excited about a new idea, new direction, or sometimes an entirely new offer. We are never short on ideas. 😅
Recently I had a client say that I helped her slow down.
I chuckled and said that, it may not be a great testimonial out of context, but what she meant was that I help her stop and think before starting something new.
At the onset of my coaching program, I ask the owner to let me know if they are considering starting anything new or making any dramatic changes between sessions, so that we can talk about it first.
Why? Because owners are notorious for starting and stopping. We are looking for an easier way, a solution to the chaos. And sometimes that means jumping in too quickly.
What it Means
Often the new idea is a distraction from harder work that we don’t want to do, or it is trying to solve the wrong problem.
I see this so often, that I wanted to find a way to give you a pause before jumping ahead when you get new ideas– even if we are not currently coaching together.
I created an audio journal just for business owners, and I included prompts for 4 common feelings or scenarios that I see owners experiencing.
- When You are Tempted by a New Idea
- When You Have a Decision to Make
- When You Need a Confidence Boost
- When It Feels Like Too Much
You can have access for free at the link below.
The hope is that you can take a pause when these scenarios show up, and get some perspective before moving forward.
Questions to Consider
If you get new ideas at an event this fall, ask yourself:
1. Is this idea taking me away from something that I already decided to do? Will working on the new idea sacrifice something else?
2. What strategic role does this idea play in my business strategy?
3. Is now the right time? Or can it wait?
If you haven’t given any business updates recently, I would love to hear what you have going on, or what you think of the journal.
